Ground support personnel are seen at the landing site after the Soyuz TMA-12M spacecraft landed with Expedition 40 Commander Steve Swanson of NASA, and Flight Engineers Alexander Skvortsov and Oleg Artemyev of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) near the town of Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014. Swanson, Skvortsov and Artemyev returned to Earth after more than five months onboard the International Space Station where they served as members of the Expedition 39 and 40 crews.

Machines which fell trees under remote control by operators standing at safe distances are being hailed as important new tools and a world first for reducing deaths and injuries in forests.

Promoters of a trial of four machines in steep Nelson forests say the results look promising for their goal of “no worker on the slope, no hand on the chainsaw”.

The trial involved installing remote control units into a forest harvesting machine, the John Deere 909 feller buncher. More work is needed on video and audio monitoring equipment before the system is ready for commercial operations after next year in a joint venture of Future Forests Research Ltd, Wood Contracting Nelson and the Crown research institute Scion. Night-time traffic on Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway is being diverted as heavy concrete beams are lifted into place for a giant triple-level traffic interchange at Waterview. Closures of the motorway’s westbound lanes are taking place late each night this week (Aug 2014), when traffic is lightest.
